Electrician Training Is Great For Your Career Prospects

Author: James Copper

Modern day lifestyle and living requires classic technology, the use and maintenance of which is best known by electricians. They shape, design and maintain the entire electrical circuit right from the power generation house to our homes, industries etc. The job of an electrician is interesting and is of massive potential where financial benefits and job satisfaction along with social progress is concerned.

The pre-requisites required to become an efficient electrician are:

- Sound mind and physical fitness.

- Multi-tasking capability and enthusiasm.

- Personable approach.

- Good vision and the candidate should not be color blind, to be able to differentiate between different wires.

- Good aptitude in math and science.

The training either begins in the classroom or directly as a helper under senior electricians. International Brotherhood of Electrician (IBEW) and (NECA) are well known institutions producing good quality electricians. There are many other such vocational institutes and lately online training is also in vogue.

The classroom training is usually 144 hours. The aspirants, here, are taught various theoretical subjects and mathematics which can prove helpful in solving the on-job problems faced. They are taught to read blueprints, which is the basic design of any electrical circuit, Ohm's laws, magnetism, conduit circuits etc. They are made comfortable with the different tools and various safety measures to be followed during wiring. After such theoretical program, follows the apprenticeship or the on-job program, the candidates are expected to put 2000 hours for this. Their working skills are trained and tested under the keen observation of experienced electricians. After fulfilling all these conditions, they are given the high school diploma certificate or (GED) i.e. General Equivalent Certificate. The entire training is extended over a period of 4 years.

One can also start as a helper under a fully trained electrician and perform the non-electrical jobs initially. Eventually he/she is taught the entire procedures and requisites to be qualified as a trained electrician. There are also some institutions, which provide training, especially in rural areas. The people are taught latest techniques and procedures. They are sensitized to the use of solar so as to make the rural life self-sufficient.

The job scope for electricians is very good. The electricians are placed at construction sites, industries etc. Employers usually hire only trained electricians after they are said to satisfy the National and respective State codes. They can also be independent and self-employed.

Electricians continue learning all through their life. It does not stop even if they possess their certificates. They have to keep themselves updated and give advanced exams regularly in order to keep their business high. In this way, a person is trained to be an electrician. There is an unmistakable and significant difference between the electricians and the household quack experimenters. To be able to fix a bulb with the help of wires and to be happy to see it work is not equal to becoming an electrician.

What Do Electricians Do?

Author: Verne

It is important to know what an electrician does, in order to realize the importance of their existence. Without electricians, we would be living as if we were in the middle ages! Electricians manage all things related to electricity. They specialize in the installation, maintenance and repairs of all electrical systems.

When a new building is built, electricians are a crucial part of the process. They need to draw up a blueprint which will specify where all electrical wiring will go. They will place something called conduits in the walls which will hold the electrical wires that will supply electricity to all your plug sockets and power outlets. Should air conditioning and heating systems be required in the building, the electricians will have to install the correct wirings. Don't forget that lighting and other electrical circuits for stoves have to be installed by a qualified electrician. When the building is finished, the electrician will install the plug sockets and power outlets, which will provide the electricity for all your electrical equipment.

It is important to remember that there are different specifications within the electrician industry. Some electricians specialize in the wiring of new homes and buildings, as mentioned above, whilst others install and maintain complex electrical breaker boxes and voltage meters. Some electrical contractors specialize in maintenance and repair. They will come out and fix broken electric stoves, light sockets, fuses that keep tripping and so forth. Some electricians are contracted to work in a company to maintain computers and other electrical aspects of the business. Other electricians work in factories and fix generators, manufacturing equipment and motors.

Many electricians work as freelancers, often specializing in their area of expertise. There are, however, many electrician companies that offer a range of services. Most companies will encompass all electrical needs and specialties. It is imperative that a qualified electrician works on the construction of a home or building. Even more so, it must be remembered that electricity is dangerous. Electricians study for years and do apprenticeships to ensure that they are as safe as possible and know exactly what they are doing. Too often, people try and fix their electrical problems themselves. This can have devastating effects. The wiring can be completely damaged, and injuries can occur.

An electrician's job is difficult and specialized. They have to be trained well, and have good hand eye coordination. They use a variety of different power tools such as drills and hacksaws. Electricians often have to work for long periods of time whilst perched on ladders, and have to get stuck into dark and dirty places. The job requires patience and concentration at all times. Furthermore, the working hours are not always complimentary, and sometimes an electrician has to work late evenings and early mornings, as well as weekends.

It is easy to see why electricians are so important. Their line of work is very specialized, and crucial to providing energy into our homes and businesses. It is usually easy to source a good electrician in your local directory. You just need to ensure that they have their legitimate certification proving that they are well trained in the verses of electrics.

UK Needs More Plumbers and Electricians

Author: Martin Hofschroer

An increasing number of people will have to train to become tradesmen if Britain is to escape a skills shortage.

Diane Johnson, president of the Electrical Contractors' Association (ECA), has warned that the United Kingdom is facing a serious shortfall of qualified tradesmen if more people do not take plumbing courses and electrical courses.

Diane Johnson said that more needs to be done to encourage people to take plumbing courses and electrical courses as it may not be long before homeowners and businesses can no longer rely on the services of tradesmen.

She said: "We are sitting on a ticking time bomb. If we don't act now, we will not have the home-grown talent needed to fulfill this country's potential. The consequences of that will be more far reaching than most people realise."

Ms Johnson went onto say that she thought there was too much emphasis on a university education in comparison to vocational courses because the valuable role of tradesmen has been ignored.

Many current university graduates would have benefited from taking plumbing courses and electrical courses instead as their degrees have not helped them secure employment during the current economic climate, according to Ms Johnson.

She added: "This is particularly alarming as the cost of a degree is causing more and more graduates to leave with quite a scary level of debt, before they've even entered the 'real' world, and with limited prospects."

Ms Johnson said that the British economy will benefit if more people take plumbing courses and electrical courses as qualified tradesmen often go on to set up their own businesses and become employers themselves.

Foreign companies undertaking contracts in the UK will be forced to bring in their own employees in the future if people do not take plumbing courses and electrical courses because Britain will not have the necessary number of skilled tradesmen.

Diane Johnson warned that Britain was falling behind rival European economies such as Germany because they are not training enough apprentices.

Government spending cuts should not affect those people looking to train to become tradesmen as this will damage the future of the economy, claims Diane Johnson.

She said: "Our industry is still climbing out of a very tough recession and we recognize the Government has to take tough measures to help aid the nation's recovery. However, we must not lose sight of the fact that we still need to train people to carry out these essential skills in years to come."

City & Guilds have launched a 'Stars behind the Stars' campaign to celebrate practical courses ahead of Vocational Qualifications Day on June 23rd.

General Electric Contractors

DESIGN ELECTRICAL & GENERAL ...

General Contractors: A Beginner's Guide

Author: Yodle

The whole idea of hiring a general contractor can be stressful, seeing as how they are the people responsible for fixing your a€œbroken stuffa€.  Whether your woes are home-related or office-related, these professional handymen are here to aid you.  However, that can be hard to remember when you get sent a whopping bill.  It may not be possible to always know when you're getting ripped off, but for all you novices, I present a basic breakdown of a general contractor's duties.  Behold!

What is it?

A general contractor is a person, or even perhaps a group, who for compensation, arranges or undertakes a bid to construct, alter, repair, add to, subtract from, improve, inspect, move, wreck, or demolish any number of different things for a paying customer.  Primarily, contractors work on buildings (be it a house or a shopping mall), highways, roads, railroads, and developments attached to real estate.  Therefore, you can imagine the massive amount of different specialized general contractors within a given area: electrical, plumbing, mechanical, highway, environmental remediation, roofing, waterproofing, and so on.

When you hire a general contractor, you're more or less hiring a construction quarterback (I could continue this metaphor by comparing subcontractors to running backs, but that'll probably just get confusing).  Basically, a general contractor is responsible for the means and methods to be used in the construction execution of any given project.  Therefore, a general contractor is responsible for supplying all materials, labor (which, if the project is large enough, may mean hiring other specialized laborers known as subcontractors), equipment, and all services that the job necessitates.

Smaller contracting jobs, such as pipe insulation in the basement of a house, would fall under the category of residential contracting as they are primarily limited to house calls and may only require one contractor or, at the most, a small crew.  Commercial contracting, on the other hand, refers to larger contracting jobs (which may require architects and subcontractors), generally reserved for things like retail outlets, manufacturing facilities, office buildings, and warehouses.  However, there can be some confusion between residential and commercial contracting.  For instance, roofing can be complicated, as a residential apartment building may in fact, fall under the category of commercial roofing depending on how large the roof is and if there are multiple protrusions such as ventilation systems, pipes, or skylights.

Who needs it?

Anyone who doesn't fancy themselves as some amateur Bob Villa type will find general contractors highly convenient.  Literally, the only work you have to do is find a contractor.  Once that is out of the way and you've settled on a price, the contractor takes control, making your leaky faucet, his leaky faucet.

Benefits

Besides the obvious benefit of bypassing physical labor, general contracting is great because there are so many different kinds.  If something in your home or office (or home office) is broken, there's not only a general contractor who can fix it, but there's more than likely a general contractor who solely specializes in fixing whatever specific thing that is broken.  You want a bigger closet, hire a closet contractor.  Your doorbell doesn't ring, hire a doorbell contractor.  Your electric garage door opener is malfunctioning, hire an electric garage door opener contractor.  You get the idea.

Also, because of the surplus of contractors in many areas, you have the ability to pick and choose.  You'll be surprised by how much you can find out about any one specific general contracting company, mainly based on customer reports.  It's also possible to match prices from company to company by doing some research on the internet.  Also, because contracting can be a competitive market, many times you can find good deals, such as free inspections and free quotes.

Risks

When you hire a general contractor, you always run the potential risk of getting ripped off, as some contractors take advantage of their client's ignorance on the project at hand.  Therefore, it may be wise to try and find out the average cost of the service being provided before you make a deal with the contractor.

Otherwise, almost all contractors are required to be licensed in their respective state, which usually means taking an oral and written exam.  So you should be aware of that, and if you are curious as to the license requirements, you can always contact the National Association of State Contractor Licensing Agencies (NASCLA).

The Bottom Line

If you have a home repair or construction problem, general contractors are the most readily available solution.  There's no guarantee that it will be cheap, but in many cases, you don't really have a choice anyway.  You can either pay a contractor or continue to sleep with a giant hole in your bedroom ceiling.
